United Way Food Drive

Hunger is real. For the first time in five years, the need is growing. More than one in four children in Story County is eligible to receive free/reduced lunch. Once summer break starts, these children won’t have access to school-provided meals. Therefore, the need for food at local food pantries is even greater during the summer months. To combat the need, United Way of Story County (UWSC) will hold the eighth annual LIVE UNITED Food Drive. Don’t forget to check the expiration dates!

The Loft is proud to join the United Way in combatting hunger. From April 25th to May 5th, we will be collecting canned goods for donation. It is a great cause that has served many local families. And if that’s not enough to motivate, we would like to pay it forward. For every 1-4 cans brought in, you will get $1.00 off your purchase, 5-9 cans $3.00 off and 10+ cans $5.00 off! We look forward to your donations!

Food items

  • canned pineapple & mandarin oranges
  • canned chicken
  • cereal
  • soup (not tomato or chicken)
  • canned meals (ravioli, beef stew, etc.)

Non-food items

  • diapers (size 4-6 and pull-ups)

You should get to know Carrie Backous of Carrie B Sewing. She is our go-to for all kinds of alterations. She is very reasonably priced, does a beautiful job, and is happy to come to Ames on Saturdays by appointment only at Tres Teal. In addition to all of those great qualities she can typically have your items back within a week! Read more about her in her short biography…

“Hello, I’m Carrie Backous, owner of Carie B Sewing. I have been sewing for about 20 years, professionally doing alterations for the past 4 years. I grew up in a family that liked to sew. I took an interest in alterations because nothing ever fit me right. I wanted to learn how to alter my clothes. I did advance studies in textiles in high school where I started to understand how to alter clothing. After that my experience has been with former colleagues teaching me the tricks of the trade. I worked with these colleagues at an alterations shop for a little over 3 years. During that time I gained much experience doing alterations on everyday wear, formal wear, as well as military. This year I started my own business, Carrie B Sewing. If you ever need my help please contact me. I live in Boone, IA and occasionally take evening appointments at my home, but primarily take appointments on Saturdays from 10:30am – 2:00pm in Ames at Tres Teal on Main Street. I enjoy sewing and I enjoy being able to help people with their fit issues.”
Carrie can be reached by email at or phone (515)298-0080.
